Virtual Meetings

When COVID-19 began virtual meetings went from an occasional occurrence to an every day standard. Now that COVID protocols have been relaxed in many offices meetings are beginning to transition to pre-COVID formats. But, virtual meetings are here to stay. When you are in a virtual meeting there are a few things to remember. Camera Angles It is important to make sure your webcam is properly facing you. Sit with your shoulders square in front of the camera. Your head should be equally spaced in the in video where possible. The camera shouldn't be pointed up showing the ceiling and only the top part of your head. Nor should it be pointed down showing only the bottom half of your head unless that is a requirement for accessibility. Speakers vs. Headphones If your workspace is not private, whether that be at home or in the office it is best to wear headphones with a mic instead of using the computer's mic and speakers. By using a headset and mic you will be able to listen more clearly to the meeting as well speak more easily. It can also help to block out background noise and limit distraction. Dress Code If you are working in a workplace environment with a dress code it is advisable to dress for the meeting according to the dress code. It is strongly advisable to fully dress for the meeting. By dressing fully for the meeting you can limit any potential problems, conflict or embarrassment by eliminating the possibility of a clothing mishap. Pre-meeting Conversation If you are logged into the meeting early be careful of the conversation you engage in with other participants before the rest join the meeting. Avoid any conversation that can be considered gossip, complaints, or negative comments. Venting is a normal part of any work environment but before a meeting begins is not the place for it. It is good to limit venting to outside of work hours. The above tips on virtual meetings can help you succeed in any type of virtual meeting as well as assist with virtual job interviews.
